Choosing the correct mat for your new watercolor

Lucky you! You have a wonderful new watercolor or print from Alan W. Cave Studios, or some other fantastic artist out there. Now the fun begins of trying to chose the perfect color mat for the piece and then the frame.

For the most part, watercolors will usually be framed when purchased in a gallery, or at the very least pre-matted to protect the piece of art. I believe that mats and frames are a very personal choice for the buyer and therefore I tend to go with a standard white mat and inexpensive frame to put the emphasis on the piece of art. This way the buyer doesn't feel as if they are married to the mat and frame because of a large investment.

So how do you chose the right color and type of mat for a piece of art? The attached link provides excellent advice and tips on mat selection. The choice of color and texture in a mat can completely change the look of the piece of art, using a reputable framer can make the process easier and assure a perfect compliment in the end.
